Kyla talks about the new album
I hope you like the first release from our new album “Opposite Lock.”
The whole feel and topic of the album is about exploration of moods and what makes us feel good, and how to harness things to make us feel positive, or enabling us to express ourselves truthfully. We are, after all, in our 50’s and believe ourselves to be “non-fake” people and open about ourselves and life in general. I have enjoyed very much, working and creating this album together, exploring our joys and frustrations of life in general and putting it to music. I can now dance around the house and it is very cathartic! The whole process has been fun and meaningful for us both and I have loved the confidence working on this album has given me. The lyrics in this song were created together by David and myself (Kyla) one afternoon. We were listening to the melodies and the music sparked in us both, a feeling of wanting to express ourselves about feelings of how depression manifests itself (David) and hiding true frustrations so others do not see that side of me (Kyla).
Whilst I only came up with the two chorus type parts “there is something you don’t know” etc, David was driven by his own experiences, which are expressed in all the other lyrics of the verses. It shows a journey of a day of the “black dog of depression” and trying to fit in, but in reality only being able to feel well in the comfort of your own environment (bed!)
The song came together really quickly. Then the catchy “I feel good” fitted perfectly, in that we are saying sometimes we do feel good, but sometimes we say we feel good, but clearly inside we really don’t, but we keep trying!
David came up with the idea of using a sound on some parts of the “I feel good” which sound tense, and at times contrasting it with softer sounding “I feel good” to show a sense of the calming of the mind and mood.
