(O) 2 - session 2 - restriction

We have just released a second song called 'restriction', still following our self imposed rules of no preparation and a maximum of 8h between conception and final master.
This time we started from the idea of writing lyrics half borrowed from an unlikely source. I chose the small book on snooker rules I had bought more than 20 years ago and Glenn immediately started to write.

In the meantime I put together a basic beat from a obscure drum sample and the GForce Linn drum. Glenn said he could hear horns and he quickly created the chord sequence for the verse with Spitfire's Epic Horns.
I thought we could stay in the symphonic realm and added the double bass/cello from Spitfire's BBC Orchestra.

I then came up with the chorus chords and Glenn was ready to give it a go with the freshly made lyrics. He found his melody straight away and we only had to slightly adapt the lyrics to fit the song.
We then worked on the structure and added some discreet drum fills and treated them with the new Klevgrand Parrot plugin which made them sound more like scratching than beats but it was a happy surprise which we liked and kept.

I doubled the choruses and added a higher octave for the end.
Finally we put together a mix with added cymbals by Glenn and I polished the lot quite quickly. Total time: under 7 hours (in two evenings)
The result is a tense piece, a mix of machine like beat with orchestral flavours and vocals partly evoking Gary Numan. Check it out here: (O)
We are having great fun doing these sessions, we hope you like them too. We'd love to read your comments!
David
